L.A. Unified loses lawyer
The lawyer who led successful litigation against a bill giving Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa partial authority over local schools is leaving the Los Angeles Unified School District.
General counsel Kevin Reed confirms he is going to UCLA, to be a vice chancellor handling legal affairs.
Some sources suggest that L.A. Unified became less comfortable for Reed after a new board majority — which is allied with Villaraigosa — took charge last July. No one has yet asserted that Reed left under duress.
It could be hard to replace Reed, a multi-tasker who managed a variety of key functions and cases. His duties included leading the bargaining team negotiating with employee labor unions.
