Paul Newman, 83, dies of cancer. He will be missed...

Paul Newman Joanne WoodwardOscar-winning actor and philanthropist Paul Newman has died at home in Westport, Connecticut, of cancer. He was 83. See the Los Angeles Times obituary here.

The actor was famous for films such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Exodus," "The Hustler," "Cool Hand Luke," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting" and "The Verdict," but also for his many years of charity work.

Paul Newman co-founded the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, with author A.E. Hotchner in 1988. The international organization arranges free camping experiences for children suffering from cancer and other illnesses and gives aid to their families.

More than $200 million, all the after taxes profits from his food company, Newman's Own, was donated to charity over the past 15 years.

I would guess that the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award he received at the Oscars in 1994 meant more to him than his Best Actor Oscar for the role of "Fast" Eddie Felson in "The Color of Money."

Although he appeared in “Road to Perdition” with Tom Hanks in 2002, his last film role was the voice of Doc Hudson in the animated feature, "Cars."

Newman leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, actress Joanne Woodward, and their five children.

Not to be corny or anything, but I'm really sad. And I have a feeling I'm not alone.

Please take a moment to remember all the marvelous moments this man gave us in his film career. And think of how many children and people he has helped in this world.

If you want to, please post your favorite memories of Paul Newman and any farewell tributes. Sometimes that helps the grieving process. I'd really like to read them all. Let's remind each other...

He was one of a kind. A class act. An inspiration and a role model. He will be remembered and loved always.

Paul Newman is going to be remember as much for his enormous heart as he will for his enormous talent. My dearest sympathies go to his dear wife and children. Paul: now you really ARE an angel.

What Paul Newman was not: In your face with sleeze, too many girlfriends/wives, down-your-throat gay, loud mouthed w/ignorant politics. He WAS among the finest men who have ever lived, and a superb actor. I'll miss the myrth in his gorgeous blue eyes.

He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker.

Dear, Dear One. He did so much but never wanted adulation, he just wanted to do a good job and he did.

God Bless you Paul, you certainly brightened up my life. God Speed! I know you will be welcomed with open arms wherever you're headed.

i was of the era that paul newman came to fame and he is another GREAT ACTOR who will ,for any reason be sadly missed. i believe he is one of those special actors who ,will always be rememeberd forever through the passing of time. my condolencies to his family

Really devastating news. I've watched four Newman films in the last 1/2 year alone (Cars, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cool Hand Luke) and will likely now return to some of my other personal Newman favorites in tribute. A tremendous talent who will be deeply missed.

This takes me by surprise. He was one of the most unusually bright spots in the strange world of Hollywood. I never considered him one of them--he towered above their nonsense. He was a great human being and the world is worse off with his loss.

I am sad to hear Paul Newman passed away. My favorite movie was 'Judge Roy Bean'.

Paul Newman was a brilliant actor, handsome forever and was a good, kind human being. I wish he was around.

Deeply saddened. What a great guy all around. I have to say the egg eating scene in, was it "Cool Hand Luke"? Butch Cassidy and The sundance kid is one of my all time favorites. I watched it recently with my kids and I think it will be one of theirs as well. Condolences to family. He will be missed!

My very soul cries at the loss of this artist and humanitarian.

Paul Newman-

Fly to the light, good brother.

Thank you for all you have given, and for the light you have shown in this world.

I already miss you so.

He was indeed a class act. He will be missed very much.

I am so sad that Paul Newman has died. I admired what I read and heard about Paul and his wife Joanne Woodward over many years. Their life together and as a family and all they were involved in outside the entertainment world was refreshing. I probably do not have this quote completely right. I remember reading his answer to a journalist's questions on fidelity and marriage. He answered, "Why would I go out for hamburger, when I have stake at home." Good-by to Gentleman Paul.

Paul Newman was a gentleman and millions of "cool" young men learned that a strong man could also be gentle from observing Newman and his life's work. He truly lived what he believed- be your own person and give back every once in a while!

He never had a "failure to communicate" this point!

He was indeed a class act. He will be missed very much.

You are definately not alone feeling sad. He was a class act. Years ago, when I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a bunchof us got a chance to be extras in The Color Of Money. We were in the bleachers durning the tournement between Newman and Cruise - between takes, Mr. Newman would just come over to entertain us with comments, chatter - to keep us unpaid extras from getting bored. He was generous with his time. And he had a huge spirit.

Paul Newman, "Cool Hand Luke",
will live forever. A man, head & shoulders above all others.

It's like a beloved member of my family/friends died. I loved all of his work and although I knew it was inevitable, I think I wanted him to live forever. My condolences to his entire circle of family and friends.

I fell in love with Paul Newman when I was about 15. Butch and Sundance and The Sting. I had only recently decided that he was probably too old for me and Joanne was never going to let him go ;o) I will miss this man that I never met, but have admired for many years. His good looks, acting ability and persona away from the glitz of Hollywood made him someone I would really have liked to have known. My prayers and sympathy are with his family. Good night, Paul. Rest in peace.

"what we have here is a Failure to communicate"

I am 48 I have grown up with him all my life. He is a true role model and great man. I have never shed a tear for anyone outside my family or friends. It was hard to hold back the tears he will be missed.

My favorite quote from Paul Newman in referring to men who cheat on their wives:" why go out for hamburger, when you can have steak at home."A man of great character and a person to emulate,

Being a young girl from North Hollywood, I had the pleasure of baby-sitting for Scott and Susan Newman when they were quite young. I got to meet Mr. Newman one evening when I was sitting for them and will never forget it. He was my favorite actor and I will always remember the thrill of meeting and talking to him that night. He was a great actor, one of the best in his generation, and he will be missed.

Newman was loved and admired by all as an actor and humanitarian.

He was one of the last of the "greatest generation."

A true American icon.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward taught us all about true love and commitment; along with character; style and grace. Paul`s movie- cool hand luke taught us: if you get knocked down; you get back up and go on whatever the cost. Always the true gentlemen and very giving of his time and money.
