Salma Hayek calls off engagement to Francois-Henri Pinault

Actress Salma Hayek, 41, will not be marrying her baby daddy, Francois-Henri Pinault, 46, a French businessman and father of her almost 10-month-old daughter, Valentina.

"We are sad to announce the engagement of Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault has been canceled. There will be no further comment," Cari Ross, Hayek's spokeswoman, said in a statement.

So Salma got pregnant, then got engaged, which seems to the norm for Hollywood couples these days: Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, Jamie Lynn Spears and Casey Aldridge. Some, like Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, the father of her baby girl, don't even bother to get engaged

Mexican-born Hayek was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of artist Frida Kahlo in the 2002 film "Frida." Kahlo was a Mexican painter. Hayek is also executive producer of "Ugly Betty" and has performed in some episodes of the hit ABC show.

Pinault is head of PPR, a French holding company that specializes in retail shops and luxury brands including Gucci and French books and music retailer Fnac.

The big unanswered question is, is it over? Or does Salma wants to keep the magic in the long distance relationship, which sounded as if it was working pretty darn well?

She told Oprah recently: "Every time he comes, it’s an event. And every time I go, it's the same and it’s so romantic and it’s so exciting. And the time we spend together, it’s 100% quality time. And then the time we're not together, I have 100% quality time to my baby, to myself, to my career."

"So for us, it works," she says. "Now, it’s not an open marriage. Nobody think this is too modern, and don’t get the wrong idea — the level of commitment is exactly the same.”
