Britney Spears gives sole custody to Kevin Federline. For now.

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have reportedly reached a settlement in their acrimonious 1½-year-long court battle over custody of their two sons.

Federline  has sole custody of Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1.  And Spears keeps her current status of two visits and one overnight per week.

That's it? Hmm. Doesn't sound like much for Britney to celebrate.

"The case has been settled," Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told E! "The court still has to approve it."

Both parties are due in court today.

The legal battle began in 2007 with 50-50 custody.

But after Spears had her series of public meltdowns and was hospitalized twice for mental health problems, she lost custody and even visitation rights, which were only recently and gradually reinstated to what they are now.

Many Britney watchers credit the appearance of her father, Jamie Spears, in her life in February (he has legal control of her affairs) for her abrupt turnaround. It remains to be seen if she can stay on the current spotless path that her dad has put her on if he's not around.

Britney will surely try to gain more custody of her kids.

So it's not over yet, folks. Do you think she'll keep trying to get babies back? And is it a good idea for the kids?

is this arrangement really in the kid's best interests? daddy dearest was sleeping around... how loving is he when no one's looking? many abusers often drive their victims to fall apart... is this what happened with britney? federline should have to undergo a rigorous mental health evaluation performed by mentally healthy psychs, not sickos he could buy off. i've seen too many women victims nearly destroyed by their abusive men to think federline is an innocnet lamb where britney's meltdown is concerned.

I think she is doing the fitrst responsible thing so far as a parent. Kfed may not be the model father but he is their father and no harm has come to them since they've been with him. That cannot be said for when Britny had them. She needs to get herself healthy then she can try at a later time to get her kids back. I respect her for the first time in a long time.

This is ideal. Britney doesn't want kids - never has! She was a child having children. It interferes with her career. She's still growing up. This will give her some space. We'll see how well Federline does - he already has two out-of-wedlock kids with his ex, Shar. He put on a big show of caring for them. Let's see how honestly he means it!

The last thing we need to hear is some deranged mother putting her kids in a tub of water. So, I do agree with the court ruling that Federline is the more fit parent and deservers sole custody.

I think she's getting about what she should get. She's a terrible mother and the boys deserve a normal life over the hellish one she's lead since they were born. If she had any real concern for the society her sons grow up in, she'll have her "tubes tied" and move to Europe.

To "julinda" who thinks Britney is an "excellent mom." These children have been neglected and mishandled in her care. I doubt Britney was doing much breast feeding. They had no regular meal, bath or bedtimes. They didn't go to the dentist. She would stay out late partying with Paris Hilton while her nannies took care of the kids. This is NOT good mothering. She probably even smokes cigarettes around those poor children. They are WAY better off without her.

You know she wasnt drinking or using drugs before she got involved with k'fed I think part of the blame should lie with him on the path she ended up going down. If I remember right he was drinking and using. So ask your self how safe are these kids really ???? I have no way of emaiing Britney but if I could, I would tell her I am proud of her for allowing her Dad to help and that I am sorry for buying and watching everything the papo does of her. I can't imagine that life style. I know from watching her that this is very hard and that she truely loves her babies. In time she can prove herself stable and she will get her children back. I believe Kevin loves his children too, but I believe he only wants his children for his 20,000 a month. Is he trying to get custody of his other children? Remember he has been fighting her for their children before she had her breakdown. I believe its more about money than their well being. Remember, he was also Britneys party buddy in the same house as the children when they were together and he didn't stop when she did. I understand why Britney gave up the fight for now, I pray that she does get those boys back after her dad is out of the picture. I honestly don't think that KFed is any kind of father. I know this because I've seen my fair share of stupid men that tear a woman apart and pretend to be wonderful in the public eye then turn into complete jerks behind the scenes. I've seen women fall apart like Britney has as well, hell I've done it, it's not easy and it makes you feel as though you're losing your grip on reality. She is doing very well, and for those of you out there saying that she never wanted those kids, um, explain to me why she had the meltdown with Jayden James in the bathroom if she didn't want those babies? Unless you're a mother yourself you'd never understand the bond between mother and child. Kfed was bunking down with his ex gf not long after his split with Brit and that girl had the gall to tell him "get our boys" as if she was the one that gave birth to them herself.
