Charlie Sheen thinks vaccinations are poison. So do a lot of other celebrities, including Jenny McCarthy and her boyfriend, Jim Carrey.
But his ex-wife Denise Richards apparently thinks that both reality TV shows and vaccinations are safe for kids. So naturally, there's a big battle brewing.
TMZ reports that Sheen's sent a legal letter to the girls' physician stating his lack of consent for the doctor to treat his daughters.

Why do Hollywood types with no scientific training have to spout off about things that they are not qualified to comment on? Current research does not support Sheens uniformed views and only makes things harder for those of us who have to provide rational health care to children. We can count on weeks of ignorant mothers refusing vaccination because some no talent actor thinks they know something. Only the children will suffer.

If he's worried about mercury in the vaccines, they do make alternatives to those. But seriously, the risk of problems associated with vaccines as opposed to the risks of a crippling disease such as Polio, Measles, Mumps are relatively small. Get the vaccinations for your kids, Charlie!
On a related note, depending upon the custody arrangement that he and his ex share, I'm not sure he has a right to dictate who she takes the kids to, or of denying her right to get the kids vaccinated. Doing it for a "reality" show, however, may be another story...

The fact is that as with any type of medication it should be our choice as a parent to decide which, if any, vaccinations our children should get. There has been concern about certain vaccines bringing on autism, and some, such as the chicken pox vaccine, are so new we really don't know what harmful side effects they may have. I resent the fact that my right to a choice has been removed from me by our government. If I don't vaccinate my children fully, they are denied their right to an education...such as it is.

While I may like Charlie Sheen as an actor, I would like to say that based on this report, I wouldn't consider Charlie Sheen much of a scientist. And a potentially dangerous parent. People with little or no science education would do better to look at the mass of evidence and draw a conclusion, rather than starting with a scary conclusion and cherry-picking the evidence to support it. The damage children can suffer from the various formerly rampant childhood diseases like polio and whooping cough FAR outweigh the imagined dangers of vaccination. This irrational fear of vaccinations is like driving across country because you are afraid to fly--in the 3500 miles you drive, you stand a HUGELY great chance of dying than in the five-hour flight. This commonly held bias overestimates the chances of a problem with a vaccine because the outcome seems so awful. But the outcome of a child getting the flu or rubella seems less awful, so the chances of that don't seem to outweigh the much smaller chances of injury from the vaccine. However, each child not vaccinated can spread their diseases to other more vulnerable people like newborns and pregnant women. Not getting your children vaccinated threatens your children, and it threatens society, because as the number of unvaccinated children rises, diseases we haven't seen in years will start to reappear, and children will start dying and suffering disabilities far more devastating than the occasional effects POSSIBLY caused by vaccines.

The letter sounds like there are more issues with this doctor other than just the vaccinations. I will say that Denise Richards was wise to do this show...It shows her as a real person...a very interesting one at that. People find themselves in situations...hers just became public knowledge. She was just living her life and maybe didn't choose the best match...who has every time...or anytime for that matter. I like this girl and have gone through her issues myself privately and it was hell. Her two children, like mine, are her top priority as well as homelife and that is obvious. The show is a hit...it is very watchable and she is very interesting. I admire her....Charlie is just a royal pain in her ass and needs to remember the kids and stop the nit picking and focus on visitation and making peace. He is likely a sociopath who knows not the consequences of his actions and in that case she has years of hell ahead of her. I know, I am two years out front of her and have heard it all before. She should just be happy he hasn't made a career out of bankrupting her as my ex has succeeded in doing. We are on our last leg and praying for a miracle...and just millionaires four years ago! Hoping for a gift from God here in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Lynn Mia and Madison. Good for you, Denise!!!

I would agree with Robert in that celebrities in holly wood, almost universally have no training what so ever in the fields of biochemistry, physiology, immunology, or clinical medicine. With that said, there opinion on this particular subject does not matter.
One only needs to look at the CDC website, or the WHO website to rapidly see that all of the available scientific data supports no link between vaccines and autism. Also the mercury containing preservative Thiomersal, that was believed to be linked to autism, has been removed from most vaccines used world wide as of 2001.
Lastly this controversy in the public eye is diverting research efforts as to the actual cause of autism.
At the end of the day, one should remember that polio, mumps, measles, and rubella, just to name a few can have severe effects on children. Failing to vaccinate can be tantamount to abuse.

This was a private matter not a public rant about immunization on Sheen's part.
This isn't something that should've been made public by the media but since it has, I say that this is between Sheen and Richards to work out. Parents should have the right to make health decisions for their children without everyone else chiming in with their opinions.

Of course he feels safe not immunizing his kids. Because the rest of us have stepped up and immunized our kids. I bet he wouldn't take his kids to a 3rd world country for an extended stay without immunizing them.

I think you are all insane. Vaccines DO present risks and I think Charlie Sheen is absolutely right! You don't have to be a scientist to dome to this conclusion, but if you ask a scientist, one who doesn't rely on the big pharmaceutical companies for his livelihood, you will doubtless find, that vaccinations can be very dangerous indeed - you didn't do YOUR homework - Charlie did his!

The following is a letter that I sent to a doctor's office. The fact that many still support vaccines is truly appalling. This is one area of medicine that many are truly ignorant of. The letter begins now:
I belong to three community forums where there are literally thousands of families who are either parents of vaccine injured children or are victims themselves. After reading your policy it has become very apparent that you know nothing about vaccines and disease, but just the fears that you remember as a child. Where is YOUR PROOF that vaccines have eradicated disease and where is YOUR PROOF that vaccines are safe? Every time that I ask a doctor or nurse for proof I find that they know nothing about vaccines and they are simply basing their decision on "blind faith" in the system. Please just explain "a few" facts that I have outlined below. I also urge you to DO YOUR HOMEWORK on the subject before putting more children and adults in danger. I've also attached my personal nightmare that I've encountered with vaccines. Shame on your office for giving people false hope on the vaccine issue and for stating that by not vaccinating they are basically selfish!
The CDC tells us that 36,000 people die each year from the flu (in order to try to mandate yet another vaccine and of course sell more too). Yet, their MOST RECENT statistics showed that they only reported 1,806 deaths in 2005 (the majority in the elderly). In previous years, it was even less. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT?
The CDC tells us that 20,000 babies contract congenital rubella each year. Yet, ONE YEAR BEFORE the vaccine came on the market, they only reported 14 cases in 1968 of Congenital Rubella Syndrome. There were even less in previous years. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT?? Why is this the case with every vaccine/disease that I have researched? Lies, lies, lies?? I am sure you must have access to these figures. If not, the references are in the book cited below.
How about the SV40 Virus? Can you explain why just 6 mo. ago the CDC mentioned nothing of U.S. Citizens receiving this contaminated polio vaccine? Very recently, they changed their story and stated that millions received it. Despite the fact that the virus causes cancer in lab animals, there is no proof yet that it does in humans. I just spoke with a mother whose young child just tested positive for it. How some 50 years later? Why, the cancer causing virus is being transferred genetically of course! So, whether you vaccinate or not, your own future generations will be affected thanks to these lunatics.
Why do doctors not practice informed consent with vaccines? Why do they only tell you about "fussiness" or inflammation at the injection site? Do doctors know that the brain has a separate immune system? Do they know what happens to it during and after vaccination?
Why do the majority of doctors not report reactions to VAERS? Why do doctors not read the vaccine literature for each and every vaccine? They don't because two different hospitals almost killed me and my baby last year due to their "lack of knowledge" involving vaccines. I now have hearing damage, my child has vision damage and I won't go into the rest of my living hell either (it is attached). IT IS ALL VACCINE RELATED!! Why do doctors not inform you of the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program? Why does .75 cents from the sale of every vaccine go into this fund? How much has been paid out to date? What have they paid out for? I would love to see every healthcare worker jailed for not practicing informed consent. Doesn't it go against your Code of Ethics?
Why are we told that formaldehyde is toxic in the air, but it is safe to inject it? Remember the FEMA trailers? My infant received AT LEAST 300 MICROGRAMS OF IT WITH THREE VACCINES! Is that why he suffered from high-pitched screaming, developmental delays, congestion, regression in milestones, etc. According to Easter Seals, it is not normal for a child to regress in achievements. Yet, his pediatrician didn't see a problem? Why isn't everyone working together on the vaccine issue? Why is the media not reporting the truth? I am just a stay at home mom - but even I can pull CDC statistics!!
Why is there still mercury in the "mercury free vaccines"? Why are we lied to? Yes, it is still there because there is NO WAY to remove it 100% because it binds with other agents in the manufacturing process! How many trace shots will trigger Autism? An independent lab (Hapi) tested 4 mercury free vials and THEY ALL HAD MERCURY! Why are we now getting many prescription drugs from China (uninspected too). Oh, I forgot our government poisoned China's children with mercury laced vaccines. Prior to 1999, Autism was unheard of there, they began buying U.S. vaccines, and by 2005 they reported 1.8 million cases! Wasn't it in 2006 that they poisoned our pets, children and food?? Hmmm....
Why hasn't there been a study on the vaccinated/unvaccinated yet? Why aren't doctors aware of Japan's recent findings on the vaccine/autism link? Why aren't doctors aware of the recent release of the infant primate study (vaccines/autism)?
Why is there a disclaimer on every vaccine that states the following: Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, and Impairment of Fertility: No studies have been done. They don't know if they cause cancer, alter our DNA, or impair our fertility - YET THEY ARE QUITE SAFE??!!

My two children and I are all victims of vaccine injuries. I am not making this up, but that is my proof. Vision damage, hearing damage, brain damage, etc. YES, vaccines do a lot of damage! Just talk to the U.S. Dept of Education - in 2007 they reported 1 in 67 children now have autism in elementary school. DO YOU REALLY THINK PEOPLE ARE THAT STUPID TO BLAME IT ON GENETICS OR ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SOLELY??
FYI - I get my "facts" from the CDC's reported statistics 1 - 5 years BEFORE each vaccine came on the market, along with viewing VAERS, speaking to chemists about the ingredients, and speaking to thousands of other victims out there.
Please respond to my questions. The media is a huge part of the problem as to why children and adults alike are still being harmed by these so-called safe and effective vaccines - lies set forth by the AAP and CDC. FYI - it used to be the poor, uneducated population that did not vaccinate their children because they couldn't afford it. Now, studies are showing that it is the parents with a college degree that no longer vaccinate. Sadly, these parents have done their research - which is more than I can say for all of you. A great book is the Vaccine Safety Manual by Neil Z. Miller. Actually, all of his books are wonderful and filled with thousands of references to get you started so that you may see for yourself. It also cites numerous studies (some flawed) for you to review also. I've since FIRED my pediatrician because ignorance is unacceptable in my book. I would hope that many of your patients are smart enough to do the same with you.
Did you ever stop to think that vaccines may have started out for the right reasons and then just became all about money? Did you ever think that maybe you doctors are lied to as well as us parents? Of course not because you haven't even done the months of research that many of us parents have done.

It is quite obvious to me that Charlie Sheen actually researched vaccines and Denise didn't. FYI - it used to be the poor uneducated people not vaccinating because they couldn't afford it. I too have elected not to vaccinate my children, based on my own research. However I have a hard time believing that Charlie Sheen has the best interests of his children at heart. I would not be surprised if he is doing this just to spite Denise. Didn't he ask her to abort their second child?

I think that I would much prefer the *EVIDENCE* from CDC, and scientists than the moronic whack websites that many people thjink are somehow authoratitive.
All my kids got full vaccines during the 80's. All four. None autistic.
In my neighbourhood, ALL childrfen got vaccionated (by law). The rates of Autism didn't spike.
People like Charlie Sheen and Jennifer McCarthy, and Jim Carrye are mannequins. The best words they speak are given to them by writers. Just because they are "celebrities", they are in no way authorities.

What is wrong with so many people out there? If Charlie Sheen had "PhD" behind his name would you suddenly consider him "credible" and then listen? Just ignore the basic concept that he has the same kind of god given intellect as any of us, and is perfectly capable of researching basic facts in order to make his own decisions about his family.
Oh, but I bet if he was instead endorsing some supposedly "healthy" sport drink or some useless trinkette you'd all pay attention and run out to buy it.
