Billy Ray Cyrus compares Miley Cyrus' topless controversy to a 'stomp in poop.'

Talking publicly about his daughter Miley Cyrus' Vanity Fair photo shoot for the first time, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus said he wasn’t there when the most controversial shot was taken.

"I didn't know they were gonna strip her down and wrap her in a blanket," Cyrus told Meredith Vieira on "Today" Tuesday in New York, referring to the shot of his 15-year-old daughter taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz. In the photo, the "Hannah Montana" star appeared to be topless, covered only by a sheet she clutched to her chest. Watch the video HERE. (Comments about Miley appear about three minutes in.)

Though Cyrus doesn't approve of the photograph, which Leibovitz defended as "a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup," he said that heeded his dad's advice on the situation.

"My dad always told me the more you stomp in poop, the more it stinks," Billy Ray said. "So I was just, 'OK, this happened. We got to deal with it.' "

And what about that other photo of Miley in Billy Ray's lap, which also raised more than a few eyebrows?

"That's just a daddy who loves his daughter a whole lot," Billy Ray explained, laughing off the question about the pose that Vieira thought made them look like more like girlfriend and boyfriend.

Aw, shucks.

I think one of the reasons the photographer did what she did was because of Miley's appearance. As many of you have mentioned, she does look much older than 15. Had it been any other star, that picture would have been a very 'beautiful' photo. This is for Billy Ray. My kids are no longer allowed to watch Hannah Montana. My children are all under 10 years old. It has gotten to the point that I screen all the shows on Disney before my children are allowed to watch them. To be honest, I don't know much about this situation and heard of this today. I am not a fan and not an avid follower. All I can say is that people need to be realistic. Everyone seems to be from one side or the other...too drastic either way. Our society sucks people thats the name of the game... Fine you can look at it that its artistic, but theres a point where that can easily be scandalized by other people. And the fact is that she is very young and has a huge fan base of children...yes she should be responsible...but only as responsible as a minor should be. The reality is that there are pressures from society regardless of that everyone makes choices. Just as she chose to take the shoot, so did the photographer, the photographer is influenced by the readers. This person knew what the readers/viewers wanted. Reality check we're all effected by society somehow. Take the example of the corruption of children, there is something wrong but no one looks at themselves. You can ignore it and say what you want, but statistics are up in all directions of child corruption, you know it we all know it. So, you reader look at yourself and what you watch and support. you Billy Ray watch your daughter, and you Miley be mindful of your effect on others.
