No cosmos for 'Sex and the City' star Kristin Davis

OK. We always suspected Kim Cattrall's "Sex and the City" Samantha character was a bit of a lush.

But Charlotte?

Who knew sweet-faced, wholesome, girl-next-door actress Kristin Davis was a recovering alcoholic who'd been sober since she first became famous?

"I’m a recovering alcoholic," the actress, 43, tells Health magazine. "I’ve never hid it, but I’ve been sober the whole time I’ve been famous, so it wasn’t like I had to go to rehab publicly."

"It’s caused a lot of confusion out in the world," she says. "I get sent many a cosmo! I never drink them."

She says she believes alcoholism is a disease. "I don’t think you can mess with it."

Was it hard to quit so young?

"I quit drinking right when I got out of school," Kristin told the Dish Rag. "I was trying to quit drinking the whole time I was in college –- the opposite of what everyone else was doing, but that was my own path. I'd started earlier than everybody, so I was ready to quit earlier than everybody. I'm thankful  because by the time I got out of college in 1987 and moved to New York City it was like insanity. There were drugs everywhere. It was very intense, and that was right when I was trying to quit, so I'm very happy. I'm very lucky really that I’d already had a kind of awakening early that drinking and/or drugs was not going to make me happy. That it was not a good thing. I was kind of living the monk's life at that point."

Today when people ask her if she couldn't just have glass of Champagne,  she says no. "I'm doing well. I still have occasional bad days. Why risk it?"

Good for you, honey! Don't listen to those people. Play it safe, DDAGTM, I say.

So, let's get this straight: Davis is a recovering alcoholic. Cynthia Nixon has become a lesbian. Cattrall got divorced from her husband after they co-authored a book on how to have great sex. Sarah Jessica Parker gets voted Maxim's 'Unsexiest Actress."

Frankly, the SATC actresses' real lives are far more interesting than their characters' in the new "Sex and the City: the Movie," which  (finally!) premieres in New York next week. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Substance abuse and actors go together like cheese and macaroni. I'm not surprised. And good for her staying sober; it's a lifelong process that's really hard.

I grew up in SC and started drinking in my early 20s. I did it for the same reasons KD did. Shyness, to be more talkative and social. I quit for periods of time but by my mid to late 30s it was getting very serious. Not until I reached the age of 41 did I really realize the negative effects alcohol was having on my life. I do not drink now and sometimes it can be lonely and scary when you don't have those drinks. But it is worth it to me not to have horrific hangovers in the morning and feel guilty about what I said or did while drinking...even if I didn't say or do anything outrageousl
