Feb. 3, 1961: Paul Coates digs into his mail bag and comes up with an invitation to watch amateur boxing at the Olympic Auditorium ... because he needs to learn how to defend himself.

TV character actor Patrick "Paint Your Wagon" Hawley stakes a claim to three blocks of beachfront between Laguna Avenue and Broadway in Laguna Beach.

"It's up to them to prove that somebody else owns it -- and I don't think they can," Hawley says.

Actually, they did.
