This looks like good old Charley Chase with Thelma.

The photo atop today's post appears to be Charley Chase and Thelma Todd in period dress playing a round of croquet, perhaps at the Hal Roach Studio.

"Clews"? Do they mean "clues"?

Charley Chase is playing croquet with Thelma Todd.

"Clew" is an old-fashioned spelling of "clue." I saw "clew" a lot in contemporary documents of the Jack the Ripper case. Yes, I admit it, I went through a big Jack the Ripper phase when I was younger.
I don't know who is playing croquet with Thelma, but he looks like the character of Mr. Weed from "Family Guy."
