Riot Closes Newport Jazz Festival

July 4, 1960: Newport, R.I. -- “Mobs of students, many of whom had driven long distances to hear their favorite musicians, were broken up with tear gas bombs, streams of water from high-pressure fire hoses and flying wedges of police cars.”

I was astonished to see this article when I decided to see if I could find any info about the riot at the festival which I attended with a friend from Albany,NY.
We witnessed the beginning of the riot and quickly got out of town.

I don't recall where we spent the night but it was definitely on a beach nearby.

How lucky we were to have chosen tickets for Saturday night.
