July 24, 1939: Gov. Henry T. Gage's home was such a well-known landmark that The Times rarely said where it was in writing about it during his term in office, from 1899 to 1903. The answer is yes, the Gage Mansion is still standing at 7000 E. Gage Ave. in Bell Gardens -- in a mobile home park.  View Larger Map

"The Mikado in Swing." Wonder what that was like. Fortunately, we can look it up in The Times' archives: Hm. "Elliot Carpenter, brilliant young Negro composer-arranger and a graduate of the Paris Conservatory of Music." Wonder what his story is. Stay tuned and maybe I'll dig something up.
