I can't post the comments from my work PC (websense blocks the comments portion for some lame reason) but the bug story in Chicago caught my eye. Anyone who lives near the great lakes knows the best thing to do is keep your mouth shut when the midges emerge.

We're in the midst of the annual "attack" right now. They hang around buildings, windows and doors and fly about. An Indians / Yankees game a few years ago was delayed for the same reason. It was a late year game, so the midges were a second bloom, but there's nothing you can spray or do to get rid of them. Evidently showman Veeck found something that worked, but he also played a midget in a game.

Also, the story about a 28 year old woman with 13 kids was absolutely amazing.

Thanks!

Actually, in the first article above Ernest E. Debs was talking about County General--but they did get the women's prison built: the Sybil Brand Institute opened in November 1963. And it of course was known for its overcrowding; built to hold 800 (other sources say 900) its peak occupancy was 2,800.

It's also an amazing and oft-overlooked modern building by A. C. Martin. Despite what they say about a rehab, if the sheriffs ever get enough money to "rehab," they are going to do a full teardown. Which is really a shame. Mostly because it's suffering some severe and official neglect since its 1997 closure.
