I read with much interest the Matt Weinstock column that mentioned a name out of the past. Virgi Partch. I was working as a printer for the Newport Beach News-Press, a 3 times a week newspaper located a couple of blocks from the pier. I lived in a duplex on 45th St, a block from the ocean for $75 a month back then.
Anyway, I used to hang out at this little bar on Balboa Island, and VIP was a regular. I knew who he was because my dad always bought 'True, the Mens' Magazine' every month and VIP was a regular contributor. He was a wild and crazy guy, and if things got too dull, he had a pogo stick behind the bar that he would hop around the block on.
Those were the days when I shopped for groceries at Richards Lido Market, and see John Wayne in the checkout line pushing a cart full of food and booze. Nobody even looked up. Times have changed!
