Hollywood fire

Hollywood_vine_corner03

Callbox Sam sends this postcard of Hollywood and Vine, showing the site of today's fire.  The picture was taken about 1957, judging by the billboard for the Oldsmobile Golden Rocket 88. Hody's also had a restaurant in Lakewood and another in North Hollywood.

In 1932, Richard Neutra designed an office building for Carl Laemmle and Universal Studios on this site. In 1940 it was remodeled by Wayne McAllister and S. Charles Lee into "Melody Lane," a coffee shop and cocktail lounge owned by Sidney Hoedemaker of Pig 'n Whistle fame. It would become Hody's (as in Hoedemaker) and in 1969 Howard Johnson's, then The Brown Derby (briefly, after the closure of the Vine Street location in 1985), Then Premiere, Then Jack's Sugar Shack, then Deep then Basque....and probably a few other things.
