A great photo! Checking the attached Google Earth screen shot of this address I see it's across the street from the Eastside Deli, home of giant sausage and meatball sandwiches, a neighborhood institution and lunch spot for hordes of hungry municipal workers.
When did the Hollywood Freeway drop into this area? Is that when the Victorian mansions of Bunker Hill were razed?

--I'd have to check for the exact date. The Hollywood Freeway was built in sections and not completed for years. Bunker Hill was lowered at least 15 feet, as you'll see from the April 15 entry on the courthouse. Also see the April 25 freeway map.

This photo was taken just east of Fig. next door to the Kim Sing Theatre.
The Eastside Market is across the freeway 2 blocks going west on Alpine.
The Pasadena freeway was built in 1940 and finished at around Alpine and Fig. in 1952, just about when this shot was taken. The Victorian houses around Bunker Hill went the way of Angeles Flight, nobody cared or knew their worth. The last of them were moved to Heritage Square.
