Hollywood conservatives: Abandoning McCain?

Mccain As we head into the final week of the presidential campaign, it's becoming apparent that Sarah Palin may have solidified John McCain's appeal with his GOP base, but the VP pick has wreaked havoc with McCain's support -- such as it is -- in Hollywood. I was just on the phone with manager-producer Eric Gold, who handles Jim Carrey and Ellen DeGeneres, who had been a longtime McCain supporter and contributor, going back to McCain's quixotic 2000 presidential campaign. Thing is, Gold just cast his absentee ballot -- for Barack Obama. What makes Gold's conversion especially revealing is that he is hardly an Obama admirer.

"Obama has done nothing," Gold says. "He has no real experience. I mean, being a community organizer and running for president -- who are we kidding? In the debates, he said nothing -- less than nothing. He's just selling temperament." But after McCain picked Palin as his VP, Gold, who calls himself a "disenfranchised Democrat," began to sour on his longtime political hero. (As have other McCain supporters.)

"If McCain had picked Lindsey Graham or Joe Lieberman, I'd probably be voting differently," says Gold. "But to pick someone of such lightweight proportions as Sarah Palin, that was the nail in the coffin. What he did by picking her was say: I'll do anything to win. He didn't care about the moderates or the independents, which unfortunately meant he didn't care about me. The real John McCain would never have done that. He went against his own principles."

Gold says that for years he stood up for McCain in a hostile environment -- liberal Hollywood. "Obviously this is a town that's not very sympathetic to Republicans," he says. "But his pandering, first with Palin, then with the speeches about Obama being a pal of terrorists, it wasn't worthy of McCain, the guy who was a different kind of Republican. All my liberal friends would say: This is the guy you're standing up for? I was embarrassed. I have lots of doubts about Obama, but everything John McCain has done in the past two months has just driven me back to the Democratic Party."

Gold is not the only McCain fan beginning to break ranks with the Republican candidate over his Palin pick and campaign tactics. Later today I'll be posting an essay from another prominent Hollywood McCain supporter -- who voted for George Bush in 2004 -- who's finding it hard to pull the GOP lever this time around. Stay tuned.

I just wanted to point out that Obama was a community organizer right after he graduated…before all the elected office stuff.

What a crock. Sarah Palin has been ruined by papers like you. She has more executive experience than Obama. Sorry, but she was elected by the people of Alaska to serve, and remained popular up until your poor and unfair coverage.

As a former film student, and creative type myself, I find your paper offensive, one-sided, and simply unfair regardless of the political stripes one holds.

Im sorry! How many Hollywood Conservatives are abandoning McCain?

A Whole ONE PERSON

That is "A" Hollywood Conservative, and if he supported McCain previously (before the presidential Camphaign) then HE the "ONE" person was NOT a conservative but a RINO Republican. SO What the Hell are you talking about. NOTHING! Typical Newspaper Journalist BS. This is unreal!

How long did it take to find this one person? Months? Years?

So, let me get this straight, since McCain picked Palin, who was at least mayor of a town and governor of a state, and does not have the experience to be president, we're supposed to believe that the Sen. with less then 2 years experience in holding any public office is going to be a great president? Lala land special! Idiots with dyed hair, fake boobs, and no brains!

Mr. Gold, I feel your pain. I sent in my absentee ballot this past week as I was going to be out of my state having medical tests completed. For the exact reasons Mr. Gold stated I voted for Senator Obama but had Senator McCain picked anyone else... and I do mean ANYONE else on the political landscape- I would probably feel much differently right now. As much as I formerly admired John McCain, Sarah Palin and her constant rhetoric about "pallin' around with terrorists" has made me sick to my stomach. I have never been so appalled at watching FOX News and their claims to be "Fair and Balanced". I know for a fact now that from now on I will consider myself an independent.

Good for Hollywood. They need to make more movies, so they can make more money for Barak to redistribute to me! I want some of Oprah's cash, a little of Jim Carey's and most of Ellen Degenerate's.
Heaven help them if they try to take any of Chuck Norris's cash. He'll roundhouse kick the living sh*t out of them. But if they do get his, I want some of that too!

Talk about shooting onesself in the foot! I'm also a "disenchanted Democrat" and would pick a moderate president with a right wing vice-president over a far left president with a moderate vice-president any day.

So you see here is the problem, "republicans" that don't want to be embarassed for their conservatism in front of their liberal friends...

How about you either start making your liberal friends worry about embarassing themselves in front of you on account of thier liberal positions.

OR start worrying about your republican brothers and sisters thinking you are a spineless coward, because really your liberal "friends" have no respect for you or your views in the first place, you can neither gain nor loose status in their eyes unless you become one of them first, so either convert or fight.

Mark me, Palin is no Rice, but she might be a Regan in a few years, and what was Regan? Just an actor.

Who cares! This article about Gold is as noteworthy as Palin's wardrobe. You do know that celebrities aren't really special don't you? Hmmm...maybe not since you're in Hollyweird. Bottom line...the L.A. Times has become another caricature of journalism...just like the Post and The N.Y. Times! ROFL... No wonder it's primary use is as a bird cage liner!

THIS ARTICLE IS RIGHT ON. I HAVE VOTED REPUBLICAN FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS BUT THIS TIME I WILL VOTE FOR SENATOR OBAMA. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT I WILL VOTE DEMOCRATE AND THE REASON FOR THIS IS SARA PALIN. HOW IN GODS NAME DID SENATOR MCCAIN DECIDE TO PICK SARA PALIN FOR HIS RUNNING MATE?

I HAVE ADMIRED SENATOR MCCAIN FOR A LONG TIME NOW BUT FEEL THAT HE HAS SOLD OUT AND LOST HIS INTEGRITY INORDER TO WIN THE WHITEHIUSE. SORRY JOHN BUT AS MUCH AS I HATE TO SAY IT YOU WILL NOT BE GETTING MY VOTE.
