Apple released a statement Wednesday afternoon announcing that Steve Jobs, its chairman and co-founder, has died.

Apple’s statement:

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. [Updated 5:00 p.m.: Apple has just added a photo of Steve Jobs to its website’s homepage, which links to Apple’s official statement on Job’s death.

The url of Apple’s tribute image to Jobs is http://images.apple.com/home/images/t_hero.png -- calling the man who is, to many, the face of the company a hero.

In Apple’s linked statement, the tech giant states: ‘If you would like to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email rememberingsteve@apple.com.’

Just what will Apple will do with those messages? The company hasn’t said yet, but one could guess it may turn into a tribute of some sort honoring Jobs, a man that many have compared to Thomas Edison due to his influence on computing, film, music and indeed, the way we live.
