Google’s next operating system, known as Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and Samsung’s newest Android device finally have a new date for their joint unveiling -- Oct. 19.

And with a new date, unfortunately for U.S. tech reporters such as myself, comes a new location -- Hong Kong.

Originally, Samsung and Google were set to launch Ice Cream Sandwich and the new gadget, which is rumored to be a smartphone going by the name of Nexus Prime, in San Diego on Oct. 11.

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the first version of Android to unify phone and tablet operating systems -- an approach taken by Apple’s iOS.

The original Oct. 11 plan would have more closely followed Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 4S, which took place Oct. 4.

But a day after the iPhone 4S made its debut, Apple co-founder and Chairman Steve Jobs died at age 56.

Out of respect for Jobs’ death, Google and Samsung announced that they would delay their new product announcements, which is how we’ve arrived at Oct. 19 in Hong Kong.

The Ice Cream Sandwich event will be streamed live to the Web at http://youtube.com/android at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Oct. 18.

And although we won’t be in Hong Kong in person next Tuesday, we will have coverage of the announcements here on the Technology blog. Stay tuned.
