Apple Inc.’s highly anticipated iPhone 5 is coming to Sprint Nextel Corp. this fall -- according to the latest rumor about the fifth-generation iPhone.

And while iPhone rumors have been rampant on the Web for the last few years, they’re also often inaccurate and as such, should be viewed skeptically until definitive announcements are made, in this case by either Sprint or Apple (which hasn’t happened).

Nonetheless, the hype about iPhone on Sprint may have begun in earnest Tuesday.

After the Wall Street Journal reported the rumor, the carrier saw a bit of a business boost fueled at least in part by the speculation that it would sell the next iPhone, which has no release date and hasn’t been unveiled to the public.

Sprint rose 33 cents, or 10.1%, to $3.59. The increase is no doubt a welcome one for the nation’s third- largest carrier behind AT&T and Verizon. Sprint’s stock overall has dropped about 15% so far this year, and the carrier lost 101,000 subscribers and reported a net loss of $847 million during its most recent quarter.

It seems Sprint could really use a little bit of Apple in its smartphone diet. Sprint and Apple officials were unavailable for comment on the rumors as of Tuesday afternoon.
