Skype for Android 2.1 adds video for 15 more phones, two tablets

Skype for Android

Android users looking to Skype for their video calling needs have had good reason to feel a bit frustrated in the past.

The reason? Only the Nexus S, the HTC Desire S and the Sony Ericsson Xeperia Neo and Xperia Pro  -- just four smartphones -- were supported for Skype video calls in the past.

That changed Thursday morning with the release of Skype for Android version 2.1, which adds another 17 phones and tablets running Google's Android mobile OS to the list of Skype video-compatible gadgets.

The update requires that a user's devices are running at least Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, but those phones will be able to make use of only rear-facing cameras, which isn't ideal for video chats quite honestly.

Phones running the newer Android 2.3, AKA Gingerbread, will be able to use their phone or tablet's front-facing cameras for video calls in addition to the cameras on the back.

The newly compatible devices are:

Tablets

HTC Flyer
Samsung Galaxy Tab

Phones

Acer A5
HTC Desire
HTC Desire HD
HTC Evo 3D
HTC Evo 4G
HTC Incredible S
HTC Sensation
HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon, U.S. only)
LG Revolution (Verizon, U.S. only)
Samsung Droid Charge (Verizon, U.S. only)
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy S II
Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
Sony Ericsson Xperia ray
