A company in Japan is selling a case for the iPhone 4 that has a lifelike looking latex hand attached to the back of the phone. It’s called the Hand iPhone case (of course) and it retails for $60 on the Rakuten website.

John Brownlee, the blogger for Cultofmac.com who first unearthed this unusual iPhone case, compared it to that poor mouse with a human ear on its back.

The lifelike latex hand comes in two styles: the feminine ‘Nami’s Hand’ and the somehow creepier little kid version called ‘Yamato’s Hand.’

The idea, I suppose, is to allow lonely people to clutch a fake rubbery hand that might make it feel like they are holding a loved one’s hand while talking to a girlfriend or a child on the phone. The thought that this would bring anyone comfort, however, makes me feel very sad.

But, as the photos on Rakuten’s site illustrate, the holding hands aspect of the Hand iPhone case is just one of its many uses. Ladies can use the hand to hold nail polish and eyeliner between its fake fingers, while men might like to use the hand as a catchall holder for pens and glasses.

For me, the Hand iPhone Case puts a whole different meaning to the classic AT&T advertising campaign from the ‘80s that encouraged people to ‘Reach out and touch someone.’
