Ashton Kutcher on Monday launched A.Plus, a Twitter app for desktop computers, built by UberMedia.

Kutcher is already one of the more popular celebrities on Twitter -- beating out CNN as the first to reach 1 million followers on the service -- and a high-profile investor in the California tech industry.

Now, with A.Plus, Charlie Sheen‘s replacement on ‘Two and a Half Men’ is testing the waters with a custom-built application that is being marketed largely on his star power.

The app is free and currently available only on PCs, not tablets or smartphones. Pasadena-based UberMedia, which is known which making UberSocial, Twiddroyd and Echofon, built the app to Kutcher’s specifications.

Combined, UberMedia’s apps account for largest audience of Twitter users outside of Twitter’s official apps. Coming in third is TweetDeck, a London-based Twitter client that both Twitter and UberMedia have been rumored to be bidding to buy.

‘We’re very excited to help Ashton create his very own Twitter client,’ Bill Gross, UberMedia’s chief executive, said in a statement. ‘It has 8 channels curated personally by Ashton, and a killer live-preview functionality (with a built-in browser) so you can see the links contained inside of Tweets live as you browse.’

Users can also create their own curated ‘channels’ of Twitter feeds from accounts that interest them. Standard Twitter app features are there as well, such as the ability to view timelines, mentions, direct messages, favorite tweets and lists, and to search.

‘What we’ve built is a social media surfing device with curated channels to enhance the discovery process of the real-time web,’ Kutcher said in a statement. ‘I hope people enjoy it as much as I do.’
