Yahoo's Livestand platform is like a personalized magazine rack for tablets
Yahoo Inc.’s new Livestand platform, announced Thursday, is designed to be the newsstand of the future: digital, mobile and customizable.
Like a magazine rack, the idea is to deliver personalized content, first on iPads and Android tablets and soon on mobile phones and Web browsers.
For now, Yahoo will be drawing most of the material from its existing Sports, News and Finance sites as well as the photo-sharing service Flickr. Livestand will show only the topics that match the interests, location and time of day that users specify.
Eventually, Yahoo hopes to get other publishers in the game, developing a revenue-sharing scheme. How its new platform will stack up against existing tablet publications, such as the recently debuted News Corp. periodical the Daily for the iPad, remains to be seen.
