Yahoo’s chief executive, Carol Bartz, said Facebook, the leading social-networking website, is a bigger corporate rival than Google, the most popular Web search company.

‘Our greatest competitor probably is Facebook, more so than Google,’ Bartz said, according to a report from Bloomberg about an event the news organization sponsored in New York on Tuesday. ‘They’re a hot site, but there’s room for more than one of anything.’

Bartz said Yahoo -- which, like Google, made its name in Web search and has since diversified into other services and products -- once strongly considered buying Facebook for about $1 billion. She also added that her plan for Yahoo’s buying of other companies will focus on acquisitions that bring users, content, engineers and advertising technology to the firm, according to Bloomberg.

Facebook, privately held, has been estimated to be worth about $40 billion. Yahoo has a market capitalization of $22.3 billion. Google is worth about $187 billion.

Now in her second year at the helm of Yahoo, Bartz recently has come under increased investor scrutiny and has been on the defensive about her performance as CEO as the company is still in the midst of a years-long turnaround effort.
