Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab Luxury Edition, will cost $1,000, report says

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Tab Luxury Edition today at the Millionaire Fair in Amsterdam, according to a report from the TG Daily website. AT&T_Galaxy_Tab_extleft1

But, other than the price tag and a couple of accessories, the so-called Luxury Edition of Samsung's tablet computer doesn't seem to do much to distinguish itself from the regular Galaxy Tab, the news website said.

The Galaxy Tab Luxury Edition will sell for about $1,000 and be packaged with a leather case and a Bluetooth headset, the TG daily reported.

The tablet included in the Luxury Edition package is the exact same Google Android-powered model as the standard Samsung Galaxy Tab, the report said.

The base-model Galaxy Tab sells for about $599 through Verizon, or $399 from Sprint or T-Mobile -- as long as you're willing to sign up for a 3G data plan.

AT&T is selling the 7-inch-screen tablet for $650 without a contract.

Samsung officials were not available for comment Monday evening, but one might hope that the Luxury Edition cases are made of, say, the same leather as found on the seat of a Ferrari, or some other upscale materials, given the steep price.

Though the price jump of about $600 more than a regular-edition Galaxy Tab might be easier to swallow for those attending the European expo of high-end and high-priced gadgets than the average consumer.

The $1,000 price is also higher than the most expensive version of Apple's 3G iPad, which sells for $849.

No word in the TG Daily report, or from Samsung, on how many Luxury Edition sets will be offered or what countries the package will be sold in.
