Twitter has begun putting advertising into users’ streams, the latest money-making experiment from the popular Internet service.

Virgin America, Starbucks and Red Bull are taking part in the test, which targets users based on who and what they follow. The ads are being rolled out with HootSuite, a third-party company, and not all users will see them.

Twitter said in a blog post that it is attempting to show only ads that are relevant to users and that it will expand the program only when it delivers a ‘high-quality user experience.’

Marketers could already buy a ‘Promoted Tweet’ at the top of searches on Twitter.com. But this step gives advertisers a spot in the timeline to promote themselves.

In a blog post, Twitter said: ‘We’re carefully looking at how Twitter users react to and engage with Promoted Tweets in the timeline. We want to display Promoted Tweets in a way that’s both useful and authentic to the Twitter experience.’
