Apple's base iPad normally sells for $499.

TJ Maxx confirmed it was selling the iPad in limited quantities and at select locations through a message on Twitter.

Marshalls has yet to send such a tweet and was unavailable for comment.

MacRumors, an Apple rumors blog, received photos from a reader who claimed to have bought an iPad at Marshalls for $399.99.

It's unclear as to whether the iPad the two department store chains are selling are new or refurbished models.
