A field of tweets for the World Series

Social networking website Twitter, the Internet's equivalent of chatting around the office water cooler, has been flooded with hundreds of thousands of messages over the last few days about Major League Baseball's World Series.

Kosmix Corp., based in Mountain View, Calif., is seeking to tap into the hype for baseball's fall classic by filtering Twitter messages -- known as tweets -- about the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants on its website Tweetbeat.

A side-by-side stream of tweets for each team is displayed on the site's World Series page. And the tweets aren't just from the teams themselves, but from anyone remotely mentioning either team in a tweet. The service isn't perfected yet -- a few tweets that seemed to have nothing to do with the Series made their way into the site's feed.

Top trending stories during games will be featured along the bottom of the page, said Sheila Bryson, a Kosmix spokeswoman.

Tweetbeat was launched in late September and is one of a number of websites and third-party applications that tap into the "Twitter firehose" of tweets and that filter messages for specific audiences.

Google and Microsoft Corp.'s Bing search engine do the same, as well as Muckrack.com, which broadcasts the tweets of news agencies and journalists.
