Apple Inc. continued fortifying its leading position in the tablet computer market Friday when Target Corp. said it would begin offering the iPad at its 1,743 U.S. stores.

The retailer will make the iPad available beginning Oct. 3. The base price will stay at $499 for the 16Gb Wi-Fi model.

Target will become the largest retail store to carry the iPad, joining Best Buy among national chains to stock the product.

The companies are likely anticipating a flood of new tablet devices that will be released in time for the holidays and early 2011, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab, HP’s unannounced device and others.
