Twitter made it official Thursday when it rolled out its own ‘Tweet’ button.

This marked one in a series of moves to assume control of features that could help further propel the popularity of the service.

TweetMeme built the popular ‘Retweet’ button which websites install to encourage visitors to share links with one click. The button had generated 750 million impressions a day, according to TweetMeme founder Nick Halstead. Twitter is licensing some of the technology that TweetMeme developed and TweetMeme will shift to a new product called Datasift.

‘The market requires an official solution that can accelerate this growth,’ Halstead said.

The official solution has some new bling: It allows websites to suggest Twitter accounts to follow.

Twitter unsettled start-ups that have built businesses on top of its service when it began to build its own version of the most popular features they had created.

Websites use buttons from Facebook, Meebo and now Twitter to encourage visitors to share content. The buttons can also be useful for these services by giving them unique insights into what content, products and services their users like. Twitter has more than 145 million users.
