Google acquires Web-based image-editing tool Picnik
Google has acquired Picnik, an online image-editing tool, for an undisclosed sum, the companies announced Monday. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Picnik allows users to import images from several sites around the Web, including Flickr and Facebook, or upload files from the desktop. Users can edit and crop images, or add different effects to photos, all from within the browser.
Google said that it doesn't plan to change anything in Picnik in the near-term and that the site will continue to operate as it did before the acquisition. However, the company did say that it will be "working hard on integration and new features."
Exactly what Google has planned for Picnik is unknown. A possible scenario could see Picnik join the ranks of Google Apps, a suite of online products from the company that are designed to replace their desktop-based competitors.
Picnik, based in Seattle, joins a growing number of acquisitions Google has made this year, including social-search service Aardvark and mobile-e-mail search utility reMail.
