Back in January 2008, Sony introduced the first commercial OLED TV with a near-paper-thin display and jaw-dropping picture quality. Two problems: The screen was only 11 inches (measured diagonally) and the price was $2,500.

It was the perfect paperweight for an executive making too much money.

Finally, Sony could be getting some competition in organic light-emitting diode technology, but details are sketchy. An executive with LG Display, Won Kim, said in an interview posted today by OLED-Info.com that the company will have an OLED television on the market by January, in South Korea first and then globally.

It will be a whopping 15 inches in screen size. No pricing was given.

If it’s like the prototype that LG showed at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, the screen will be just over 0.3 inch thick.

Meanwhile, DisplaySearch released a report this week that said Sony could be on track to release a 27-inch OLED model for the holiday shopping season, but that was unsure because of the company’s financial condition.
