I caught up with Rep. Edward J. Markey, chairman of the House telecommunications and Internet subcommittee, after today’s congressional hearing looking into the way some Internet service providers are tracking their customers’ Web use to deliver targeted ads. (Read more about the hearing in my earlier post about Markey calling for clear customer approval of ISP tracking). In the video, the Massachusetts Democrat explains his concerns about the tracking technology known as deep packet inspection, which involves looking into the content of online communications, and the need for legislation to address privacy concerns surrounding it.
