Olympic jerseys auctioned for a good cause

The NHL Players Assn. has teamed up with to help a worthy cause.
Starting today, 140 Olympic hockey jerseys worn by players from the 12 countries that participated in the men’s tournament at the Vancouver Games will be auctioned in support of the union’s “Hockey for Haiti” relief project.

Jerseys from the various countries will be featured in one-week auctions. Team Canada’s jerseys went on the block today and Sidney Crosby’s  jersey was drawing the most interest, to no one’s surprise.

Canada’s jerseys will be auctioned this week, followed by Team USA starting May 18, Team Finland on May 25, Team Slovakia and Team Sweden starting June 1, Team Russia and Team Czech Republic starting June 8, and Team Switzerland, Norway, Germany and Latvia starting June 15.

Bidding for the game-worn jerseys started at $1 — and has gone up considerably.
All proceeds will to go to “Hockey for Haiti,” a joint initiative involving NHL veteran Georges Laraque, the NHLPA, and World Vision. The NHLPA previously pledged $100,000 to the relief effort, which is designed to help survivors of Haiti’s devastating earthquake.
