Lakers' Andrew Bynum misses another practice

November 21, 2009 |  3:19 pm

Bynum_300 For the second consecutive day, Lakers center Andrew Bynum was unable to practice because of an injured ankle.

Bynum, who rolled his right ankle during Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bulls, said after Friday's practice that he would play Sunday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Staples Center.

But Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said after practice Saturday that they weren't "sure" if Bynum would play.

Bynum will be a game-time decision.

Lakers' Andrew Bynum injured ... but not too seriously

November 20, 2009 |  2:35 pm

Just when the Lakers thought they had a healthy starting frontcourt ...

Center Andrew Bynum rolled his right ankle while playing defense against Brad Miller in Thursday's victory over the Chicago Bulls. Bynum was called for a foul on the play.

"I've been getting a lot of treatment on it," Bynum said today. "It stiffened up this morning."

Bynum, however, said he would play Sunday against Oklahoma City.

Lakers' Luke Walton has back procedure

November 19, 2009 |  3:49 pm

Lakers forward Luke Walton had a surgical procedure Wednesday to treat a pinched nerve in his back, the team said.

Walton had a facet rhizotomy performed by Dr. Michael Port. In the procedure, an electrode is inserted next to the inflamed nerve and the tip is heated to deaden the nerve signal in that spot in the spine.

Walton is expected to miss about six weeks.

Lakers' Pau Gasol says he'll play Thursday against Bulls

November 18, 2009 |  1:40 pm

Pau Pau Gasol, who missed the first 11 regular-season games with a strained right hamstring, said after practice today that he will play Thursday night.

Gasol had a good practice and said he felt comfortable enough to play against the Chicago Bulls at Staples Center.

Gasol has missed a little over five weeks with the injury, which he sustained during training camp.

When asked if he was a go for Thursday night's game, Gasol responded:

"I really hope so. I really do. I think that I'll be able to go tomorrow. It felt great today."

Gasol said  he is concerned about his conditioning and wasn't sure how many minutes he would play.

"I'd be happy if he played 25," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said about the minutes he expects to play Gasol.

Walton, in his seventh season with the team, missed practice today because of a sore back. He was examined by Dr. Robert Watkins.

Walton, 29, is averaging 3.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and about 11 minutes a game this season.

His injury is likely to give reserve forward Josh Powell additional playing time.

Lakers making improvement on injuries

November 16, 2009 |  2:36 pm

The Lakers got good news Monday on two injury fronts.

Lakerslogo Pau Gasol, out with a strained right hamstring, practiced today and said that if all goes well the next couple of days, "hopefully I can play on Thursday."

Kobe Bryant, who has a strained right groin that limited him during Sunday night's game, practiced today. Bryant said he will play Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons at Staples Center.

"It was tight and stuff like that, but it wasn't enough to keep me out of there," Bryant said after practice.

Gasol, who has been out for almost five weeks with the injury, did some full-court action at practice, saying afterward that it was "a very positive day."

Gasol said he hopes to practice again Wednesday, to see where his hamstring stands then.

Luke Walton didn't practice today because of a sore back and probably won't play Tuesday night.

After getting out-rebounded Sunday night by the undersized Houston Rockets, who start a 6-6 center in Chuck Hayes, Lakers Coach Phil Jackson wanted his players to work on rebounding.

The Rockets collected 60 rebounds, 13 offensive, including two by guard Kyle Lowry in the fourth quarter.

The Lakers, on the other hand, had just 38 rebounds.

There was a moment during the Lakers' scrimmage today when Josh Powell got an offensive rebound. Jackson let his players know about that.

"That's what beat us last night, guys," Jackson barked. "You guys have to get the ball. Get the ball!"

VIDEO: Pau Gasol on 'CSI: Miami'

November 16, 2009 |  2:01 pm

Lakers forward Pau Gasol guest stars on tonight's episode of "CSI: Miami," which airs on CBS at 10 p.m. PT.

As you can see in the above video highlight, Gasol is not the most natural actor in the world. But he wasn't hired for his acting abilities; CBS is hoping to get Lakers fans to tune in.

What a cheap bid for viewers. It would be like us writing a blog post on Pau Gasol being on TV in an attempt to get cheap page views. We would never stoop that low.

Lakers vs. Suns: Lakers rout Suns

November 12, 2009 |  7:49 pm

Lakers_240 With three days off before they last played a game, the Lakers rested, practiced some and got an injured player back.

They showed no signs of rust during a 121-102 blowout of the surprising Phoenix Suns Thursday night at Staples Center.

Andrew Bynum, who had missed the last two games with a sprained right elbow, made his return with a double-double of  26 points on 13-for-18 shooting and 15 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant continued his dominating ways, scoring 29 points on 13-for-21 shooting.

The Suns entered the game with an 8-1 record, but fell to 8-2. The Lakers improved to 7-1 and head to Denver to play the Nuggets Friday night..

The Suns had this high-octane offense that allowed them to score 112.3 points per game, tops in the NBA.

But the Lakers shut the Suns down.

It was the Lakers who had the high-octane offense, building a 27-point lead at one point.

It looked so easy for the Lakers against the Suns in the third quarter.

It seemed like the Lakers could score anytime they wanted.

That's how it looked when the Lakers built a 25-point lead in the third on their way to a 92-71 lead at the end of the quarter.

Jason Powell came off the bench to give the Lakers a big lift in the third, scoring 10 points.

----

The Lakers clamped down on defense in the second quarter against the Suns, just like they did in the first quarter.

The Lakers held the Suns to 21 points in the second quarter in opening a 59-45 half-time lead over Phoenix.

By the half, the Lakers had limited the Suns to 32.7% shooting.

Kobe Bryant had 19 points in the first half.

----

The Lakers were on fire in the first quarter, getting an shot they wanted against the Phoenix Suns defense.

The Lakers made 60.9% of their shots.

Kobe Bryant went to work again in the post, scoring 12 points on five-for-nine shooting. He also had two assists in the first.

Andrew Bynum, back after missing the last two games with a sprained right elbow, had eight points on four-for-six shooting. He also had five rebounds and one assists, a nice pass to Ron Artest.

----

If Lakers Coach Phil Jackson and his team defeats the Phoenix Suns Thursday nigiht, he'll tie Larry Brown for fifth on the NBA's all-time coaching win list with 1,048,851 victories.

But that was the last thing on Jackson's mind before the game.

Alvin Gentry has the Suns back playing an up-tempo brand of basketball.

The Suns lead the NBA in scoring, averaging 112.3 points per game.

The Lakers are averaging 102.7 points per game, but they don't want to get into a running game with the Suns.

The Lakers will run when presented the opportunity, but they'll look to run their triangle offense.

Today, you get a chance to do something our Hall of Fame basketball writer, Mark Heisler, couldn't do: Make a choice.

They both have won four titles for the Lakers, so the question is, who is the best coach in L.A. Lakers history, Phil Jackson or Pat Riley? We'll even give an option of "other" for you Del Harris and Randy Pfund fans out there.

Vote in today's poll and let your voice be heard, then leave a comment letting us know why you voted the way you did.

Lakerslogo Bynum has practiced the last two days after missing two games because of a strained right elbow and sore right triceps.

Bynum was injured late in the Lakers' Nov. 4 win over Houston.
