Jockey Garrett Gomez injures heel in fall at Santa Anita

Jockey Garrett Gomez, who has won six stakes races in the first 10 days of the Santa Anita meeting, injured his heel on Sunday when his horse, Silver Summation, reared and unseated Gomez while leaving the walking ring before the eighth race.

"I don't know the extent of the injury," the jockey's agent, Tony Matos, said Monday. "I don't know how long he'll be out. Hopefully, not too long."

Gomez is a two-time Eclipse Award winner and ranks second in the nation in 2012 earnings, with $380,380 won in the first eight days of racing in the new year.
