Mariners outfielder Greg Halman dies after stabbing in Netherlands

Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday in his native Netherlands, police said. Halman’s brother has been arrested as a suspect.

Halman, 24, was found bleeding from a stab wound after police were called to a home in Rotterdam early Monday morning, police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said. Officers and paramedics were unable to save him.

Halman’s 22-year-old brother was taken into custody, said Wessels, who declined to give the brother’s name according to Dutch privacy rules. No charges have been filed.

“He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned,” Wessels told the Associated Press in a telephone interview. “It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened.”

Halman hit .230 with two home runs in 35 games and 87 at-bats in 2011, starting at all three outfield positions for the Mariners in 2011 before being optioned to triple-A Tacoma. He also played nine games for the Mariners in 2010 for a total of 44 career big-league games.

He played in the Dutch Pro League and was part of the gold medal-winning Dutch squad at the 2007 European Championship.

The Mariners have yet to release a statement.
