CC Sabathia had a rough outing in the New York Yankees’ 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of their American League division series. Or did he?

Manager Joe Girardi disagrees with that assessment, despite the fact that his ace gave up four runs and seven hits with six walks and three strikeouts in six innings for a no-decision Monday night.

“I actually thought he made a lot of good pitches tonight and I thought the zone was a small zone,” Girardi said. “No disrespect to anyone, but that’s what I thought. That’s what I saw.”

But Sabathia is making no excuses.

‘I’m not going to sit here and say it’s the umpire’s fault,’ said Sabathia, who threw 27 pitches Friday night before Game 1 was called after 1 1/2 innings due to rain. ‘I just didn’t make pitches when I needed to.’
