What would a Mark Sanchez versus Rex Ryan throwdown look like?

Not pretty, says Sanchez, who laughed off comments he made in an article appearing in GQ magazine’s September issue that he ‘wanted to fight’ the Jets’ coach after Ryan considered benching him last season.

‘Was I going to fight Rex? Obviously not,’ Sanchez told the Associated Press following New York’s 20-16 preseason loss to Houston on Monday night. ‘That would be like [Oscar] De La Hoya and George Foreman. Way out of my weight class and he’d probably kick my butt.’

Ryan didn’t necessarily say he would back down from a fight, but he was happy to know one of his players would do pretty much anything to keep his starting job.

‘You want that guy that is competitive,” Ryan said. “We’re both competitive guys and all we want is what’s best for our team.’

With Ryan putting the Jets on a Super Bowl-or-bust itinerary once again this season, New York is going to need a little more passion from its players if it wants to avoid losing in the AFC Championship game for the third consecutive season. RELATED:
