After a 45-foot fall ended his chase for a third consecutive BMX Big Air gold, surgery has repaired Chad Kagy’s broken right femur. He will not compete in tonight’s BMX Vert competition.

Kagy first posted on his Twitter @chadkagy around 1 a.m. today: “Hey guys. Thanks for all the awesome love and support. I broke my femur in half and am having surgery tonight to have a rod put in. I’m in good hands!”

Kagy’s girlfriend later posted on his account with an update that the surgery went well.

Kagy completed a double backflip on the initial jump of the Big Air competition, but when he attempted a flair tailwhip on the following quarterpipe, Kagy fell to the deck. Once he slid to a stop, he immediately waved the medical team over to his side, and he was carried out on a stretcher several minutes later.

One of Kagy’s earlier runs was good enough to net him a bronze medal with a score of 89.33 points.

Alternate Jan Valenta will ride in Kagy’s place in the BMX Vert competition tonight.
