X Games: Defending gold medalist Ryan Sheckler advances

July 29, 2011 |  2:28 pm

All three defending medalists advanced as the men’s Skateboard Street competition whittled its field to 10 Friday afternoon.  In the elimination round, 20 skaters were split into four heats, with each heat consisting of an 18-minute jam session in which the skaters took turns with 45-second runs.

The top 10 skaters advanced to Saturday’s final. Scores were based on the overall impression of each run, and each skater’s best run served as their score. The 10 to advance:

1. Ryan Decenzo 88.33 (last year’s bronze medalist in this event)
2. Luan Oliveira 87.66
3. Ryan Sheckler 87.00 (last year’s gold medalist in this event and a San Clemente native)
4. Greg Lutzka 84.33 (a Los Angeles native)
5. Nyjah Huston 82.33 (last year’s silver medalist in this event and a Huntington Beach native)
6. Chaz Ortiz 82.00
7. David Gonzalez 80.66
8. Sean Malto 80.33
9. Chris Cole 79.66
10. Shane O’neill 79.66

These 10 will return to the concrete plaza serving as a simulated urban environment Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The course includes a traffic light, some remnants of a construction site, five sets of stairs and a number of ramps.
