Jerime Anderson’s attorney said Friday he hopes the justice system treats the UCLA senior guard like it would any other college student who stands accused of stealing a laptop.

‘It should be equal justice under the law,’ said Brentwood-based defense attorney Jon Artz. ‘I would hope my client receives fair-handed justice from the [district attorney’s] office, and I’m sure he will.’

Anderson will be arraigned on Sept. 27 at the Airport Courthouse on suspicion of grand theft after allegedly stealing a laptop Tuesday. He has been suspended for UCLA’s season opener against Loyola Marymount on Nov. 11 and barred from all team activities.

‘He’s really sorry and embarrassed and humiliated for whatever judgment he used that day,’ Artz said.

Asked if that was an admission his client had done something wrong, Artz said, ‘One can draw inferences from that. ... Clearly, Jerime is a young man who has no prior arrests or contacts with the law. For him to be arrested, it’s a major blow and he’s extremely sorry and humiliated.’

Artz would not address the specifics of the case, saying he had not seen any police reports and had spoken only briefly with Anderson.

‘I would suggest everyone remember there’s a presumption of innocence,’ Artz said.
