Tiger Woods confident he can catch Jack Nicklaus

Tiger Woods gave no timetable when he might return to golf Tuesday, but he said he was confident that Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships was still within his reach.
Asked about the Golden Bear’s record, Woods, who has not played since withdrawing after playing nine holes at the Players Championship on May 12, said, ‘We’re about at the same pace, in years on tour, for majors won.... I’m confident what my future holds.’
Woods, sidelined indefinitely by an injured left Achilles, said he probably came back from that and knee injuries too soon at the Players. ‘I pushed it too hard,’ said Woods, sporting a new, fuller beard than he has worn before.
Woods missed the U.S. Open in June; the next major championship is the British Open next month. He gave no indication that he would try to play in that or when he might return to the tour.
Woods, in his 15th full season on the PGA Tour, has 14 major titles and needs five more to surpass Nicklaus, who also had 14 at the same stage of his career. Nicklaus won his final major, the 1986 Masters, at age 46.
