Wimbledon: French Open champ Li Na taken out early
Sabine Lisicki, a 21-year-old from Germany who had been carried off the court at the French Open after collapsing with cramps and who needed a wild card to get into the Wimbledon main draw, upset third-seeded Li Na, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6.
Li had become the first Chinese woman to win one of the four major tennis tournaments when she took the French Open last month.
Lisicki missed five months of the 2010 season with an ankle injury that she said kept her on crutches for seven weeks, but she has always showed a firm grass-court game. In 2009, she made the Wimbledon quarterfinals and won a Wimbledon warm-up tournament at Birmingham two weeks ago.
"My emotions are over the moon," she said.
"It was very very hard," Lisicki said. "I had to start from zero after being on crutches for seven weeks. Getting the wild card here, I appreciate it so much."
