Done deal: Robert Guerrero, Marcos Maidana to fight in San Jose on Aug. 27

Gilroy The head of Golden Boy Promotions said Monday that he had finalized all deals related to an Aug. 27 junior-welterweight bout pitting top contenders Robert Guerrero of Gilroy versus Argentina's Marcos Maidana at San Jose's HP Pavilion.

The bout will be televised by HBO and will be a World Boxing Assn. interim title fight.

The 28-year-old Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) is a rising player in the stacked 140-pound division that counts Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan among its world champions. A victory over Maidana would probably propel Guerrero to a shot at the winner of the clash between Khan and fellow champion Zab Judah on July 23 in Las Vegas.

Maidana (30-2, 27 KOs) has already produced the 2010 fight of the year in a decision loss to Khan, and he claims a knockout victory over world welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. Earlier this year, Maidana defeated former world lightweight champion Erik Morales.

"This is an opportunity for an absolutely sensational fight," said Golden Boy Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer. "You know when you make a fight like this, it can be an all-out slugfest, a candidate to be fight of the year."
