Angels' Vernon Wells is activated for tonight's game

June 7, 2011 |  3:43 pm

Angels left fielder Vernon Wells, out since May 10 because of a right groin strain, has been activated off the disabled list and is in the starting lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. To make room on the roster for Wells, the Angels optioned utility player Alexi Amarista back to triple-A Salt Lake.

Wells, acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera in January, hit .183 with four home runs and 13 runs batted in before suffering his injury on May 9. But with the Angels' offense struggling -- they've scored  12 runs while losing five of the past six games -- Wells will be a welcomed addition to the middle of the order.

Wells played two games on rehabilitation assignment for Class-A Inland Empire, and he hit a three-run double in the first inning of Monday night's game against High Desert.
