The Angels placed reliever Fernando Rodney on the 15-day disabled list because of an upper-back strain and recalled right-hander Bobby Cassevah from triple-A Salt Lake on Monday afternoon.

Rodney, who has a 4.09 earned-run average in 26 games but has not pitched since Wednesday night, did not accompany the team to Seattle, where the Angels begin a three-game series against the Mariners on Monday night. The veteran right-hander was being examined in Southern California by Dr. Lewis Yocum, team physician.

Cassevah had a 1-3 record and 4.64 ERA in 18 games for Salt Lake, striking out 12 and walking 10 in 21 1/3 innings. He is expected to be available for Monday night’s game.
