USC men’s basketball associate head coach Bob Cantu interviewed with officials from UC Davis in Houston this week to become the Aggies’ head basketball coach, a person close to the situation confirmed Saturday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because nothing official has been confirmed nor is ready to be announced. Former UC Davis coach Gary Stewart recently stepped down after eight seasons at the helm. He had an 88-148 record in that span.

Cantu, the head recruiter for the Trojans, has been at USC for 10 seasons and has coached at the collegiate level for 15 years. He was previously reported to be a candidate for the open head coaching position at Fresno State.

In May 2008, Cantu, who has helped recruit nine players who went to the NBA and has been a part of six NCAA tournament appearances with USC, was recognized by FoxSports.com as one of the top 20 college basketball assistant coaches.
