Nine months after suffering facial injuries and having surgery to correct visions problems, jockey Tyler Baze made a triumphant return to Hollywood Park on Thursday, winning the sixth race aboard Joyful Success.

Baze was seriously injured on July 24 at Del Mar approaching the starting gate. His mount, Night Justice, jerked his head back and smashed Baze’s face. Baze suffered a broken nose, fractured his orbital bone around his eye in 10 places and had his teeth severely pushed back.

Night Justice was trained by Peter Miller, and the horse that won for Baze on Thursday, Joyful Success, was also trained by Miller, who gave Baze a big hug outside the winner’s circle.

Baze made his return to racing earlier this week at Turf Paradise and had three mounts Thursday.
