Angels’ Dan Haren named AL’s co-player of the week

The accolades continue to pile up for Angel pitchers Dan Haren and Jered Weaver.

On Monday, Haren was named the American League’s co-player of the week, sharing the honor with Tampa Bay’s Johnny Damon. Haren was 2-0 last week with 14 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings, holding opponents to a .148 batting average. Including in that was his third career shutout, a one-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. It was the first time Haren has won or shared the player of the week honor. (Damon batted .375 in 24 at-bats with two homers, four runs and 11 runs batted in.)

Haren and Weaver share the major league lead with 4-0 records while Haren’s 31 innings pitched was tops in baseball and his 1.16 ERA second-best entering Monday. Weaver’s 1.30 ERA is fourth-best in the AL. And according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, Haren and Weaver are the first teammates to win four times each in their team’s first 15 games since Dizzy Trout and Al Benton did it for the 1935 Detroit Tigers.

Oh, and by the way, the last two teammates to finish April with 4-0 records? That would be Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito of the San Francisco Giants. Which could be a good omen for the Angels since the Giants went on to win the World Series.
